Why Abu Dhabi is launching an ambitious new autonomous racing series
“The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) will organize prestigious driverless races at the UAE’s Yas Marina Formula 1 track using Super Formula cars from Japan, capable of speeds over 185mph. The inaugural event on 27 April aims to highlight the speed of autonomous driving by bringing top computer scientists, coders, and developers together in competition. With a $2.25 million prize pool, teams will strive to enhance AI technology and sensors to make their cars faster and smarter. A2RL is a project of ASPIRE, the UAE’s Advanced Technology Research Council program management arm, led by executive director Tom McCarthy, who envisions a long-term investment in this initiative. The race cars, based on the Dallara EAV24 chassis modified from the Super Formula SF23 design, are equipped with advanced cameras, radars, lidars, and GPS for autonomous driving, tested with ex-F1 driver Daniil Kvyat in Dubai. This groundbreaking racing series aims to showcase cutting-edge technology, promote consumer acceptance, and deliver an engaging experience for both live and online audiences.”
