Formula E is making its debut in Japan, marking the fifth race of the season with four different winners in the previous rounds. Nick Cassidy of Jaguar TCS Racing, the current leader, aims to bounce back after a crash in Sao Paulo, where he has had previous success by winning three different championships, including the Japanese Formula 3 title. Sam Bird hopes to continue the momentum for NEOM McLaren following their first win in Brazil. Pascal Wehrlein of Tag Heuer Porsche and Mitch Evans of Jaguar will strive to close the gap in the Drivers’ Championship standings.
The circuit features 20 corners and spans 2.585 km in an anti-clockwise direction, with a mix of fast turns and slow chicanes. Notable sections include a twisting first sector and a fast portion between turns eight and ten. Fans can expect exciting racing with opportunities to activate Attack Mode at turn four.
The event schedule includes FP1 and FP2 on Friday, followed by Qualifying and the Race on Saturday morning in GMT. Weather forecasts predict rain before FP1, clearing up for sunny conditions on race day, reaching a high of 21 degrees.
Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds is optimistic about the potential for more races in Asia, highlighting the successful organization of the Tokyo E-Prix and the thriving EV market in the region. The decision to host a race in Tokyo garnered significant interest, with tickets selling out quickly. Dodds sees untapped opportunities in Asia, especially in countries like China and Thailand, where electric vehicle sales are rapidly growing.
