George Russell suffered a shock Mercedes power unit failure which handed a comfortable victory to Kimi Antonelli in the Canadian Grand Prix, as a McLaren gamble badly backfired.McLaren took a chance and started on intermediate tyres following light drizzle, although it instantly backfired as those around them started on slicks. It resulted in Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri both pitting in the opening two laps, with the latter conceding the team “looked like idiots”.With Russell out of the race and the McLarens nowhere, it opened the door to Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen to claim second and third.
