Kimi Antonelli has extended his lead in the F1 drivers’ title after winning the Canadian GP, following a shock retirement for George Russell
The race at McLaren was disastrous as the team started on intermediate tires despite the dry conditions, leading to retirements for Lando Norris due to a mechanical issue. Antonelli won comfortably ahead of Hamilton and Verstappen, becoming the first driver to win his opening four Formula 1 races consecutively.
The Mercedes duo battled fiercely until Russell’s shocking retirement on lap 30 while leading in Montreal. Retirements were abundant in the opening stages, notably Russell’s shock power unit failure.
Ahead of the race, a tyre conundrum emerged due to light drizzle at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, with McLaren opting for intermediates which proved costly. The lead changed hands multiple times, with Russell briefly overtaking Antonelli before a mistake saw him give back the lead.
An intense battle ensued between the Mercedes drivers, with position changes and tight racing throughout. Alonso retired with a reliability issue on lap 27, followed by Russell’s sudden stop on lap 30 due to a power unit failure, turning the race on its head.
