Liam Lawson and Nico Hulkenberg handed different FIA verdicts for ‘unusual incident’
Following an incident described as “unusual” by the stewards, Liam Lawson and Nico Hülkenberg were investigated for a starting procedure infringement.
Both drivers received a reprimand, with Hülkenberg also receiving a suspended stop/go penalty for the season, to be activated only if he repeats the offense.
The stewards noted Hülkenberg’s slow start on the formation lap, where Lawson ended up moving too soon, causing them to be out of position briefly before lining up correctly on the grid.
Although Hülkenberg did not start from the pit lane as per regulations, the stewards suspended the penalty due to the unusual nature of the incident.
The stewards’ report highlighted that the non-standard situation did not disrupt the grid or affect the race, leading them to view the penalty as too severe for a minor breach.
Ultimately, the stewards decided to suspend the Stop and Go Penalty based on mitigating circumstances, exercising their authority under ISC Article 12.4.6.
