The FIA will implement a number of rule changes at the Miami GP to improve both racing and qualifying.
Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya believes that changes to the power unit regulations at the upcoming Miami Grand Prix will benefit all teams with Mercedes engines and weaken a major strength of Ferrari. The adjustments, agreed upon by the FIA, FOM, drivers, and teams, aim to enhance safety and make overtaking more natural, as well as restore qualifying laps to a fully competitive level. Notably, the changes also address race starts following dangerous incidents in the 2026 season. A new system will be in place to assist cars having trouble at the start by releasing electrical energy from the MGU-K for an extra push. These modifications are expected to reduce the risk of start-line crashes significantly. Montoya predicts that Mercedes-powered cars, which have historically struggled at the start, will see an advantage from these rule changes, while Ferrari’s electric starts may be negatively impacted in the initial phases of the races.
