F1 driver fury over Qatar safety issues ‘understandable’ – FIA
FIA Single Seater Director Nicolas Tombazis acknowledged that drivers’ frustration over not being consulted about safety changes for the Qatar Grand Prix Sprint is understandable. Pirelli identified major tyre issues that could lead to blowouts after practice at the Lusail International Circuit and determined that running past 20 laps would present a safety issue. The FIA implemented measures such as adjusting track limits and a familiarisation session to address the issue, but drivers were disappointed by the lack of prior consultation. Tombazis stated that safety is the top priority and explained that modifying the kerbs was not possible due to time constraints. He clarified that the kerbs used at the circuit adhered to FIA specifications and the track had followed guidelines, but further research is needed to improve the interaction between tyres and kerbs.
