George Russell has leapt to the defence of former AlphaTauri F1 driver Nyck de Vries by criticising Red Bull’s Helmut Marko.
De Vries was dropped by AlphaTauri before the Hungarian Grand Prix, leading to Daniel Ricciardo’s return. Despite being five years older than Yuki Tsunoda, many expected De Vries to lead the team. However, he struggled in the opening rounds and faced criticism from Marko. Russell, who raced against De Vries in F2, believes it was unfair to assume he would be the team leader solely based on his age and experience. He feels De Vries didn’t have the opportunity to gain confidence and deserved better.
