The FIA race stewards have clarified the reasons behind McLaren driver Oscar Piastri receiving a 10-second penalty for a safety car infringement at the British Grand Prix.
During the chaotic mixed weather race at lap 21 of 52, Piastri braked abruptly on Hangar Straight as the safety car lights went out, causing the chaotic situation.
Max Verstappen, in second place, had to take evasive action when Piastri suddenly slowed down, briefly passing him and expressing his frustration.
The stewards found Piastri’s braking to be severe, citing a sudden reduction in speed from 218km/h to 52km/h due to high brake pressure, which endangered other drivers.
Piastri disputed the penalty, allowing team-mate Lando Norris to claim victory on home soil and reducing Piastri’s championship lead to just eight points behind Norris.
