The FIA race stewards explained that McLaren driver Oscar Piastri was given a 10-second penalty for braking too hard during a safety car restart at the British Grand Prix, causing Max Verstappen to take evasive action. The stewards found Piastri’s braking to be excessive and in violation of the sporting regulations regarding safety car procedures. Piastri’s penalty allowed his teammate Lando Norris to win the race, while Piastri finished second and saw his championship lead decrease to just eight points. Despite the penalty, Piastri expressed frustration and disbelief, suggesting that he had been braking similarly behind the safety car earlier in the race. The incident drew comparisons to a similar situation involving George Russell in Canada, but the stewards deemed Piastri’s actions to be more severe.
