The NTT IndyCar Series has immediately changed the Push to Pass system, allowing drivers to use it as soon as a restart occurs at this weekend’s race on the Indianapolis road course.

There is no longer a lockout period at the end of a caution period, and the system will be available at all times, while the lockout at the start of the race through most of the first lap remains.

This adjustment was made following an incident at the Grand Prix of Long Beach, where the Push to Pass was mistakenly left available at the restart, prompting 12 drivers to use it when they shouldn’t have.

Although this mistake was not penalized, it led IndyCar to review and update the rules, leading to the decision to allow Push to Pass on restarts from now on.

Series President Doug Boles stated that this change aims to enhance driver and team tactics, with the hope of increasing wheel-to-wheel action on the track.

Despite the update, the total activation time of 200 seconds remains intact for the upcoming event, maintaining fairness and strategic challenges for all competitors.
