Surviving the Unthinkable: Fernando Alonso’s Heart-Stopping Accident at the Australian Grand Prix

In one of the most dramatic crashes in F1 history, Fernando Alonso was lucky to walk away from this terrifying shunt.

The 2016 Australian Grand Prix marked the 10th anniversary of Fernando Alonso’s dramatic crash, in which his McLaren collided with Esteban Gutierrez’s Haas at high speed, resulting in a spectacular accident.

Alonso attempted an overtaking maneuver at Turn 3, but his reaction time was slightly delayed, causing his front-right wheel to hit Gutierrez’s left-rear tire at 305 kph, sending his car into a high-speed crash into the wall.

The impact generated a peak lateral deceleration of 45G, causing Alonso’s car to slide into a violent barrel roll with three suspension corners destroyed as it came to rest in the gravel trap.

Despite the severity of the crash that saw his car rotating 540 degrees in the air before landing, Alonso managed to walk away from the wreck, albeit with fractured ribs and a collapsed lung.

The incident was deemed a racing incident by the stewards, highlighting the intense and dangerous nature of Formula 1 racing even with safety advancements in place.
