George Russell’s status as F1 championship favourite has been stolen by team-mate Kimi Antonelli.
According to Martin Brundle, George Russell finds himself in a challenging situation after his Mercedes teammate, Kimi Antonelli, outperformed him by winning four consecutive races in the 2026 season following Russell’s initial victory in Australia.
Unfortunately for Russell, an engine failure in Montreal allowed Antonelli to secure an easy win, increasing his lead in the drivers’ championship to 43 points over Russell.
Despite strong displays from both drivers, Russell needs to adopt a more strategic approach and play the long game to overcome the deficit.
Brundle noted Antonelli’s impressive performances but also highlighted the need for the young driver to perhaps temper his flamboyance and focus on consistency.
Overall, the season ahead poses a significant challenge for Russell as he navigates the competition with his teammate in a bid to reclaim the top spot in the championship standings.
