Aston Martin has taken the big step of building its own F1 gearboxes for the first time in 2026.
Fernando Alonso believes that both Aston Martin drivers risk looking “stupid” by crashing in Monaco if the ongoing gearbox concerns are not resolved. The Silverstone-based team has faced challenges with downshifts on the new gearbox since the Miami GP, with Alonso describing the issue as “random.” Ahead of the Monte Carlo weekend, Alonso emphasized the importance of finding solutions to avoid potential crashes into the walls during downshifts. He highlighted the risks of rear locking or pushing when dealing with erratic downshifts in Monaco, emphasizing the need for improvements. Alonso acknowledged the team’s progress in addressing the gearbox issues post-Canada but emphasized the significance of a successful Monaco weekend. He expressed readiness to tackle the challenges and attention to detail required for a successful racing weekend in Monte Carlo.
