Carlos Sainz Sparks Dialogue on Future F1 Challenges Beyond Engine Regulations

Carlos Sainz has identified another area of the F1 rules he’d like to see addressed.

Carlos Sainz is calling on F1 and FIA officials to address the issue of “DRS train” style racing caused by the new active aero wings in 2026. The active aero regulations for 2026 allow both front and rear wings to open in designated zones on the track to reduce drag and increase speed. Unlike the traditional DRS system, every driver can use the active aero system without needing to be within one second of the car in front. The new system was intended to compensate for the heavier cars with larger batteries, but it has led to DRS-style racing and the formation of “DRS trains.” Sainz believes series leaders should examine this issue as they also adjust power output for 2027, increasing reliance on internal combustion engines. Despite his concerns, Sainz appreciates the FIA’s responsiveness to wet weather and praises their efforts to improve racing conditions.
