Jochen Mass defied the belief that nice guys always come last, being a well-liked and successful racer in Formula 1 and sportscar competitions. Despite his charm and victories, including one at the Le Mans 24 Hours, some believed his kind personality hindered his ultimate success in F1. Alastair Caldwell, McLaren team manager during Mass’s time there, thought Mass was too nice for the cutthroat world of Formula 1, focusing on other interests like sailing and yachting. Mass’s stint at McLaren began after Mike Hailwood’s injury in 1974, and despite some successes, he was overshadowed by James Hunt, who became the team’s number one driver. Nonetheless, Mass did achieve his sole F1 victory at the Spanish Grand Prix in 1975, although it was marred by tragedy.
