Carlos Sainz believes that with the introduction of a mandatory two-stop race at the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, the element of unpredictability, or the “lottery” as he calls it, will be even greater this weekend. The FIA World Motor Sport Council made the decision to enforce two pit stops per driver in an effort to increase excitement on the narrow streets of Monte Carlo. In recent years, the width of the cars and frequent one-stop strategies have made it challenging for F1 to deliver thrilling races in Monaco. The move to two mandatory pit stops comes after a previous race where only a few drivers pitted under race conditions after a red flag situation. There are speculations that cars starting further back on the grid may opt for two early pit stops and then manage the hard compound till the end. Sainz feels that while this change brings more unpredictability, it could also lead to teams manipulating pace and employing team orders differently. On the other hand, Nico Hulkenberg of Sauber acknowledges that track position remains crucial regardless of the number of pit stops, and the new rule adds another layer of unpredictability that could work in favor or against a driver’s race outcome.
