Mercedes Stands with Confidence as F1 Prepares for Revamped Rules in 2026

Mercedes deputy technical director Simone Resta is confident that Formula 1 teams will not be caught off guard by the 2026 rules overhaul, despite initial concerns raised about the new regulations. The 2026 changes will introduce new engine and aerodynamic regulations, emphasizing the transition to a new era in the championship. Some teams had expressed worries about potential battery power issues on power-sensitive circuits, but F1 is dedicated to implementing the new rules, with teams collaborating closely with F1 and the FIA to address any concerns.

While there were initial apprehensions, teams now see opportunities for innovation under the 2026 rules, with designer Adrian Newey highlighting the room for creativity. Resta believes that the FIA has been proactive in addressing potential loopholes in the regulations, ensuring that any issues can be resolved before they become problematic. Although challenges may arise at tracks like Monza, Resta downplayed the significance of potential battery power issues, stating that changes to the power unit usage are already in the works.

Resta noted that the 2026 rules have provided stability for teams to focus on development work, with continuous refinements in the aerodynamic aspects. Teams have been actively working on preparations since January, benefitting from a mature regulatory framework that allows for innovation and improvement.
