During Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix qualifying, George Russell received a reprimand from the stewards for entering the fast lane without a suitable gap. The Mercedes driver stopped at an angle that obstructed his view of approaching cars while trying to enter the fast lane at the beginning of Q3 in the pitlane. Russell inadvertently activated the clutch, causing his car to lurch forward. Mercedes admitted to shortcomings in managing the situation. Russell accepted the reprimand but noted the significant blind spot in the pitlane. Despite starting Sunday’s race in fifth, he recognized the limits of their performance compared to pole-sitter Lando Norris. The incident followed a strong showing by Mercedes in the previous Canadian Grand Prix, where Russell secured victory and rookie teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli achieved his first F1 podium. Red Bull’s subsequent protests regarding Russell’s actions behind a safety car were dismissed hours after the race.
