Max Verstappen has acknowledged that his collision with George Russell at the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix was not appropriate, and questions arise about Red Bull’s communication with FIA race control. Verstappen expressed frustration over being put on the C1 hard-compound tire after the Safety Car restart and claimed he was hit by Leclerc and then pushed off track by Russell. The incident involved an investigation by the FIA for leaving the track and gaining an advantage, leading Red Bull to instruct Verstappen to give the position back. Christian Horner of Red Bull criticized the lack of response from race control when seeking guidance on the matter, indicating the team had to make the call themselves. The stewards’ decision outlining Verstappen’s penalty made clear they would not have acted against him for rejoining ahead of Russell, with another document noting Russell’s move at Turn 1 caused him to briefly lose control. Horner reflected on the challenges faced by the team in making such split-second decisions and highlighted the need for clarity and guidance from race control in such situations.
