Chastain "drove off into the sunset" to surprise Phoenix win
Ross Chastain, who had a disappointing season and was not in contention for the championship, dominated the race at Phoenix Raceway, leading 157 out of 312 laps and beating championship contenders Kyle Larson and Ryan Blaney to win his second race of the season. This is the first time since the playoff format was introduced in 2014 that the champion did not win the season finale. Chastain celebrated his victory by smashing a watermelon, while series champion Blaney did burnouts. Chastain’s team, Trackhouse, had a challenging season, but this win was a testament to their hard work and goals. Despite not making the playoffs, Chastain ended the season in ninth place with two wins, 10 top-five, and 14 top-ten finishes. Team co-owner Justin Marks expressed pride in the team’s success and acknowledged the increased level of competition in the series.
