During Friday’s Indy 500 practice, Kyffin Simpson of Chip Ganassi Racing experienced a severe crash just 50 minutes into the session. Simpson’s car spun out at Turn 4, hit the wall, went airborne, landed on its side, and then slid into the inside wall at pit road entrance. Despite the intense crash, Simpson radioed that he was okay but noted the car was loose.
The incident prompted an extended stoppage for barrier repairs and safety checks. The team will have to switch to a backup car due to the primary car’s extensive damage. After nearly 40 minutes, the session resumed.
Simpson was released from medical care without major injuries, but he described the crash as strange and unexpected, emphasizing that the car didn’t feel right from the beginning. The team plans to analyze data and prevent such incidents in the future. Only one other minor incident occurred during the previous days of practice involving Christian Rasmussen spinning his car with minimal damage.
