During the Sprint race, Magnussen received three 10-second time penalties for repeatedly going off track and gaining an advantage over Lewis Hamilton. He admitted that his actions were intentional and stated that he used similar tactics earlier in the season to help his teammate, Nico Hulkenberg. Magnussen accepted his penalties, acknowledging that his behavior was unsportsmanlike. After a meeting with stewards, it was concluded that there was no clear evidence of intentional unsportsmanlike conduct. However, stewards recommended a possible increase in penalties for repeat offenders in the future to prevent similar incidents. McLaren team boss Andrea Stella criticized Magnussen’s behavior and suggested he should take time off to reconsider his sportsmanship.
