Jonathan Rea and Paul Denning might have linked up 16 years ago, if things turned out differently.

At the WorldSBK Jerez test on Tuesday, Jonathan Rea joined Yamaha after many successful years with Kawasaki. David Denning, Yamaha’s team boss, had previously tried to sign Rea for Suzuki in the British Superbikes in 2007 but was unsuccessful. Denning expressed his admiration for Rea’s decision as it led him to become a six-time World Champion. Denning described the transition as quick and surreal but expressed his excitement to work with Rea. In the past, Yamaha and Kawasaki were fierce competitors, but Denning looked forward to building a strong working relationship with Rea. He mentioned the pleasure of getting to know Rea as a person and his family during the signing process.
