A week after the European Commission authorized Liberty Media’s acquisition of Dorna, the American company finalized the purchase of 86% of the Spanish firm by paying €4.3 billion. 14% is retained by Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna, and Enrique Aldama, overseeing the company’s operations. This acquisition, one of the biggest in recent sports entertainment history, gives Liberty Media control over the second-most followed motorsport championship in the world. The goal is to expand MotoGP, particularly focusing on growth potential in specific regions globally, notably targeting the North American market where Dorna faced challenges in reaching a broader audience. With the new leadership structure, Ezpeleta remains CEO, Aldama as COO, with support from Carlos Ezpeleta and Dan Rossomondo in key roles within Dorna. The formation of a new working group, including figures like Chase Carey and Sean Bratches from F1, will kick off the transition process at Dorna to focus on the commercial aspects first, aiming to boost the series’ popularity, especially in the United States.
