McLaren boss Andrea Stella acknowledged the need for “tough conversations” following the intra-squad collision between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri at the Canadian Grand Prix. Despite the incident, the drivers will continue to have the freedom to race.
The clash between Norris and Piastri during the Montreal race had similarities with McLaren’s 2011 incident involving Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton. Norris, being fully at fault, inadvertently compromised his own race by colliding with Piastri on the start-finish straight.
Norris took immediate responsibility for the accident, showing self-criticism and apologizing to Piastri and the team. Stella highlighted the importance of supporting Norris and learning from the incident to become a better driver.
McLaren plans to address the collision through debriefs and discussions, upholding their principles of allowing their drivers to race freely while reinforcing team guidelines to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Stella emphasized the need for Norris to demonstrate resilience and growth from the situation, focusing on learning opportunities and moving forward positively.
