IndyCar Laguna Seca: Herta tops crash-filled opening practice
The 23-year-old Californian driver set an impressive pace in the practice session at Laguna Seca, clocking a flying lap time of 1m07.5382s. He achieved his fastest time on the harder primary tyre compound. Pato O’Ward from Arrow McLaren finished just 0.0529s behind him, securing second place, while teammate Alexander Rossi took third. Marcus Ericsson from Chip Ganassi Racing came in fourth, followed by Kyle Kirkwood from Andretti Autosport in fifth. Rookie Juri Vips led Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing to a sixth-place finish, with his teammate Graham Rahal in seventh. Callum Ilott from Juncos Hollinger Racing secured eighth place, and the six-time IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon took ninth. Rinus Veekay from Ed Carpenter Racing rounded out the top 10. The practice session was interrupted by multiple red flags, with incidents involving Romain Grosjean, Juri Vips, Scott McLaughlin, Agustin Canapino, and Will Power. Agustin Canapino also received a grid penalty for the upcoming race. Additionally, it was announced that Malukas will complete the driver lineup for Arrow McLaren in the 2024 IndyCar season.
