Friday favourite: The Californian who rescued a doomed Toyota Le Mans result
Toyota’s domination of the Le Mans 24 Hours in recent years makes it hard to believe that there was a time when the mention of the Japanese manufacturer was followed by talk of its ‘curse’. This curse began in 1994 when the privateer SARD team, on course for victory, experienced late failures at the race. However, in the 2018 edition, Toyota finally broke the curse and enjoyed a champagne shower at the end of the race. In the 1994 race, the SARD team, including Eddie Irvine, who was drafted into the lineup, had a chance at victory until 90 minutes before the finish when a mechanical issue occurred. Irvine’s teammate, Mauro Martini, believes that without Irvine’s heroic attempt to fix the car, they would not have finished second. Despite the disappointment, Martini still considers Krosnoff, who tragically died in an Indycar crash in 1996, as the best teammate he ever had.
