Exclusive: F1 defers decision over points system tweaks
Following discussions among F1’s midfield teams to expand the points system to cover the top 12, the topic was brought up at Thursday’s F1 Commission meeting attended by the FIA, F1, and all 10 teams. Support from five current teams was needed for the change to proceed, with several already in favor, including Red Bull and Ferrari. However, it was decided at the meeting that more time was necessary to evaluate the implications of the proposed change. The matter will be further examined and re-addressed at the next F1 Commission meeting later this year, indicating no rush for a swift decision. The proposal aims to address the competitive gap seen in 2024, where the top five teams dominate points distribution, leaving midfield teams with fewer rewards. The points tweak, if approved, would offer more competition and opportunities for teams like Haas, RB, Sauber, Williams, and Alpine. The FIA confirmed that the points adjustment will be re-evaluated at the next meeting, with additional decisions made to introduce rear-facing cameras and plan 2025 pre-season testing.
