Gabriel Bortoleto has yet to fulfill his early promise in Formula 1 in terms of achieving points on the board which convert into dollars in the coffers. His team-mate, Nico Hulkenberg, has accrued 20 points, leading to comparisons and admiration from Bortoleto towards the German veteran for his driving skills. Sauber, amidst recent boardroom turbulence, is working towards a brighter future and is encouraging Bortoleto to progress systematically.
Despite initial success in the season-opener in Australia, Hulkenberg’s points were mainly due to strategic tire changes, and subsequent races revealed challenges with airflow separation in the car. Sauber identified solutions to improve driveability, introducing upgrades focused on better performance rather than simply adding peak downforce. The team’s approach of problem-solving rather than blaming drivers for shortcomings indicates a methodical and positive direction for future races.
