The much-vaunted 60:40 change to F1’s power units for 2027 could collapse.
Williams boss James Vowles has discussed disagreements concerning a critical rule change that could potentially cause issues within the F1 community. The decision to shift F1’s power units to a 60:40 split for 2027 from the previous 50:50 ratio faces challenges, risking collapse after further discussions. Changing the rules requires a supermajority agreement on the Power Unit Advisory Committee, which includes key stakeholders like Audi, Honda, Ferrari, Mercedes HPP, and Red Bull Powertrains, along with the FIA and F1. Among these stakeholders, Audi and Ferrari have expressed opposition for different reasons, while Honda remains open to the outcome, and Mercedes HPP and RBPT are reportedly supportive of the change. Williams, a Mercedes HPP customer, is actively involved in these discussions, with Vowles emphasizing the need for balance and cooperation among all parties to navigate the challenges efficiently.
