Ferrari has tested the second version of the FIA’s experiment spray guards using a 2022 car at its Fiorano test track
Ferrari recently tested two new versions of the FIA’s spray guards at its Fiorano test track using a 2022 car driven by Arthur Leclerc. One version featured more dramatic wheel covers compared to the ones tested by Mercedes last year. The ‘Wet Weather Package’ (WWP) being tested aims to improve visibility in wet conditions to avoid issues like the chaotic 2021 Belgian Grand Prix, where the race was decided based on one lap under the safety car. This test is crucial in gathering data on the effectiveness of the WWP and determining if it can reduce spray by approximately half. The FIA is still evaluating different designs to tackle visibility challenges in wet weather and aims to possibly implement the WWP in the regulations by 2025 or 2026. The main challenge lies in determining if wheel covers can significantly reduce spray, considering aerodynamic factors like diffusers also play a role in generating spray on the track.
