Find out what super clipping is in F1 2026 and how it actually works.
In the 2026 F1 season, “super clipping” is a crucial concept for energy management, involving harvesting energy at high speeds without sacrificing performance.
Teams are experimenting with various methods to recharge the batteries of the new power units, with lift and coast and super clipping being the primary techniques.
Super clipping involves harvesting energy at the end of a straight or in fast corners while the car remains at full throttle to minimize drag.
The recharging process is mainly automated through the ECU but can be manually controlled by the driver, affecting the aerodynamics of the car.
Although super clipping allows for continued high speeds and reduced drag, it only recharges the batteries to 250kw, not the maximum 350kw capacity.
McLaren tested super clipping up to 350kw during pre-season in Bahrain, and the FIA will assess the results to ensure compliance with regulations.
