Find out what overtake mode is in F1 and how the new system works.
In the 2026 F1 season, drivers can use the ‘overtake mode,’ a new tool designed to enhance overtaking opportunities.
This feature replaces the DRS system that was removed after the 2025 season.
‘Overtake mode’ allows drivers to gain an extra 0.5MJ of energy per lap, boosting their speed during overtaking maneuvers.
To access this additional power, drivers must stay within one second of the car in front at the detection point.
If a driver fails to overtake and falls back by more than one second at the next detection point, they lose access to the ‘overtake mode’ for the following lap, similar to the DRS restrictions.
