Toto Wolff says Mercedes is open to a radical new set of regulations, potentially with a 1200bhp engine.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff expressed openness to reintroducing V8 engines in F1 and suggested a powerful 1,200bhp “mega engine.” FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem hinted at the return of naturally aspirated engines in F1’s next engine regulations cycle, expected to kick off in 2030 or 2031. The current F1 rules aimed to attract various OEMs like Audi, Honda, General Motors, and Ford to the grid, either independently or through partnerships.
Transitioning back to V8 engines would mark a significant departure from hybrid technology, yet Wolff is willing to consider it as long as some electrical component remains. Mercedes is enthusiastic about new engine regulations, particularly those involving V8s, but with the crucial consideration of maintaining a connection to real-world relevance. Wolff emphasized the importance of structured discussions and inclusive decision-making processes to ensure the viability and success of the proposed changes.
