Kimi Antonelli left his Mercedes looking like “Lego” according to Toto Wolff.
Toto Wolff emphasized his belief that speed cannot be forced out of someone who lacks it, highlighting Kimi Antonelli’s remarkable Australian GP qualifying recovery following a practice crash.
Antonelli’s FP3 crash at Turn 2 damaged the Mercedes, requiring a quick repair job to make it to qualifying, during which the team gained crucial extra time due to Max Verstappen’s Q1 crash.
Despite the setback, Antonelli secured second place on the grid behind George Russell, showcasing Mercedes’ dominance at Albert Park.
Wolff praised Antonelli’s raw talent and expressed relief at successfully getting the car ready in time, likening its appearance to a “Lego F1 car.”
He acknowledged the challenges of working with a naturally fast but occasionally risky driver like Antonelli, emphasizing the team’s efforts in helping him grow and learn from experiences like this one.
