Oscar Piastri became the first driver to beat a Mercedes in 2026, much to his own surprise.
Oscar Piastri was pleasantly surprised to come out on top in his battle with George Russell during the Japanese Grand Prix.
Despite qualifying behind both Mercedes drivers, Piastri took the lead in the opening stages with an excellent start off the grid.
Although Russell quickly recovered to second place, Piastri managed to stay ahead, even surprising himself.
Piastri was confident of beating both Ferraris in the race and felt he could stay ahead of Russell as well.
A safety car period ultimately cost Piastri the victory, allowing Kimi Antonelli to win the race.
Despite the setback, Piastri’s ability to keep Russell at bay was a big surprise and a pleasant one at that.
