Oscar Piastri and Sergio Perez have explained how “there are a few more tough decisions to make” for non-European drivers trying to reach F1.
Sergio Perez highlighted the challenges non-European drivers face in gaining access to Formula 1 due to the sport’s European base. Only seven out of 22 current drivers are from outside Europe, demonstrating the hurdles for those from other continents. The difficulties of non-European drivers were discussed, with the last non-European world champion being Jacques Villeneuve in 1997. Both Perez and Piastri emphasized that the biggest challenge lies in reaching Formula 1, rather than achieving success within it. Once in Formula 1, opportunities are believed to be equal for all, with success depending on being in the right place at the right time. piastri echoed Perez’s sentiments, acknowledging that the lead-up to F1, such as moving to Europe as a young racer, poses significant obstacles.
