McLaren’s Defiant Response: Breaking the F1 Stand-off with Verstappen’s Bold Remarks

McLaren boss Andrea Stella is worried “everyone will lose” if the proposed power unit changes are not adopted.

Andrea Stella is urging the power unit providers who are believed to be hindering the amendments to the F1 regulations for the 2027 season to reconsider their stance. He believes that the proposed switch to a 60/40 split in internal combustion and electrical power, compared to the current 50/50 split, will enhance the championship and prevent negative outcomes for all involved. Despite initial expectations of ratification, Ferrari and Audi appear to be opposing Mercedes HPP, Red Bull Powertrains, and Honda at the Power Unit Advisory Committee. A super majority vote from four out of five power unit manufacturers, plus approval from the FIA and F1, is required for the amendments to pass smoothly. The debate over these changes was a hot topic during the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, with Max Verstappen expressing concerns about potential delays in implementing the proposal. Stella emphasized the necessity of altering the power unit components’ division to address issues in the current era of F1 and expressed hope for a successful agreement to make the 60/40 split a reality in 2027.
