Talks between the FIA, F1, and the teams are now underway, but McLaren has a clear objective from the meetings.
McLaren boss Andrea Stella is advocating for an increase in the super-clipping charging limit for F1 cars to address safety concerns. Meetings are currently ongoing during the April break, involving the FIA, F1, teams, and power unit manufacturers to find solutions for issues that have emerged in the first three grands prix. Super clipping, the process of charging batteries at full throttle with a cap at 250kw while cars can produce 350kw, has become a key discussion point due to its safety implications. The first meeting took place on April 9th, with future talks scheduled later in the month. Technical regulations will be further discussed on April 16th, with a decisive “high-level” summit on April 20th to determine rule changes for the Miami Grand Prix, pending formal ratification from the World Motor Sport Council. Andrea Stella highlighted the necessity of considering a 350kw super clipping limit to prevent drivers from having to lift and coast, emphasizing the importance of a thorough and analytical approach to address the issue effectively.
