The new-for-2026 F1 cars were put through their paces on Sunday at the Australian Grand Prix.
Lando Norris has expressed concern about the increased risk of “big accidents” in F1 due to the new cars’ dramatic closing speed in braking zones. The new 2026 challengers made their debut in Australia, with George Russell claiming victory over team-mate Kimi Antonelli. The race featured intense overtaking battles, notably at the front between Russell and Charles Leclerc. The drivers now face added pressure to manage the battery’s electrical output during the race. Norris highlighted the dangers of the significant speed differences during wheel-to-wheel racing, emphasizing the potential for major accidents. He suggested that the current situation, influenced by power unit performance, creates a precarious environment with little control for the drivers. Despite concerns for safety, Norris acknowledges that the heavy investments in power units indicate that the situation may not improve soon and could even pose a threat to fans.
