Lando Norris capitalised on a Mercedes fight to finish second in the Canada Sprint.
Lando Norris has disclosed that McLaren’s strategy during the Sprint race in Canada was to position themselves to benefit if the Mercedes drivers engaged in a battle. The reigning world champion, starting third, finished second by taking advantage of a duel between George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, with the latter going off track twice. Despite Russell and Antonelli gaining a significant lead of over three seconds, Norris managed to close the gap swiftly as the Mercedes drivers fought among themselves. Utilizing Antonelli’s errors to his advantage, Norris moved into second place and aimed to challenge Russell. Although he was unable to overtake Russell, Norris successfully defended his position against Antonelli. Reflecting on the race, Norris expressed satisfaction with McLaren’s approach, mentioning the excitement of witnessing the Mercedes battle and acknowledging the team’s quick pace. Despite the challenges of the track, Norris highlighted the importance of avoiding errors and noted the race as a positive outcome for McLaren.
