George Russell makes Mercedes vow as Max Verstappen threat looms

George Russell signed a new Mercedes F1 contract in 2025 despite strong links for the team with Max Verstappen.

George Russell has confirmed that he will remain a Mercedes F1 driver in 2027, despite the looming threat of Max Verstappen potentially joining the team.

Speculations arose in 2025 that Russell might leave Mercedes if Verstappen signed with the team in 2026, but Russell ultimately renewed his contract with Mercedes after no exit clause was triggered in Verstappen’s deal with Red Bull.

With Red Bull facing challenges in 2026 and Mercedes performing strongly, rumors have resurfaced linking Verstappen to Mercedes and hinting that Russell might be replaced by Kimi Antonelli.

However, Russell has made it clear that he is committed to staying with Mercedes in 2027, regardless of whether he wins the drivers’ championship or not.

Russell emphasized that he has a multi-year contract with Mercedes and that he plans to fulfill his commitment to the team, expecting the performance metrics to be achieved as outlined in his contract.
