George Russell Battles the Gods in F1 Title Fight Setback

George Russell now trails Kimi Antonelli by 43 points after just five rounds of the 2026 season.

Following the heartbreak at the Canadian GP, George Russell expressed feeling as if the gods are against him in the battle for the F1 title. Despite leading the race and battling teammate Kimi Antonelli, Russell’s Mercedes power unit failed on Lap 30, allowing Antonelli to secure his fourth consecutive win and make F1 history. Antonelli now leads with 131 points to Russell’s 88, with Russell facing challenges like a safety car in Japan, qualifying issues in China, and a DNF in Montreal. Despite winning two Sprint races, Russell acknowledges the tough battle ahead, with the biggest points deficit overcome in the current system being 46 points. Reflecting on his luck, Russell remains determined to enjoy every race and aim for victory, hoping for a change in fortune to join the title fight.
