Alonso Unleashes Bold Attack on Formula 1 Establishment

F1 is looking set for a different power unit split between internal combustion and electrification from 2027, but Fernando Alonso is not convinced that it is the answer to all the problems.

Fernando Alonso criticized Formula 1 for losing “nearly a decade” of “pure racing” due to its focus on hybrid technology. He made these remarks during media day before the Canadian Grand Prix, while discussing a proposed change to the power unit split between internal combustion engines and electrification from 2027. The recent Grand Prix in Miami saw FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem announce a shift towards a greater internal combustion engine influence, abandoning the previous 50/50 split. The decision follows backlash over new power unit regulations, which have led to frustration among drivers, citing issues like superclipping and lift-and-coast tactics. While some in the paddock welcomed the change, Alonso believes significant transformation will only occur in the next regulatory era, potentially involving a return to V8 engines. When asked about the switch to a 60/40 split, Alonso stated that it is best to wait for the next era, emphasizing that the core characteristics of these power units will remain constant, rewarding slow corner speeds.
