On 28 April 2007, Nick Heidfeld brought contemporary F1 machinery back to the Nurburgring Nordschleife for the first time in 31 years.
On this day in 2007, Nick Heidfeld drove a modern Formula 1 car around the Nurburgring Nordschleife, reviving the grand prix legacy on the historic circuit. He completed three laps in the BMW Sauber F1.06 challenger, setting a fastest time of 8m 34s in front of 45,000 spectators. It was the first time since 1976 that an F1 car had conquered the Nordschleife, where Niki Lauda had a near-fatal accident. The date held special significance, as Lauda had won his first GP 33 years earlier, before his life-changing crash at the Nordschleife. Heidfeld, enjoying a successful season start, found the experience deeply moving, calling the drive incredible and praising the legendary track.
