Revving Back to Life: End of a 71-Year Ban on Circuit Racing in Europe

It’s a historic moment in Switzerland after a ban on track racing in the country was lifted, effective July 1.

The Swiss government recently removed the 71-year-old ban on circuit racing, which had been in place since the tragic 1955 disaster at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Following the Le Mans disaster, countries like France, Germany, and Spain temporarily halted motorsport activities, but lifted the bans once safety measures were improved.

In contrast, Switzerland had the ban enshrined in national law, although specific types of motorsport such as time trials and rallies were still allowed.

Despite the ban, Switzerland continued to produce top motorsport talent, with Formula One winners like Jo Siffert and Clay Regazzoni hailing from the country.

The recent decision shifts power to regulate motorsport events to local cantons, which will ensure events meet stringent safety and environmental standards.

While Switzerland won’t immediately pursue hosting Formula One races, recent events like Formula E races in Zurich and Bern show a gradual easing of restrictions and a step towards international motorsport returning to the country.
