Critical F1 deadline passes after FIA make late 2026 rule changes

A crucial F1 deadline has passed for the five power unit manufacturers.

F1’s power unit suppliers had to submit a full dossier of their power units to the FIA by March 1st, which was the homologation deadline.

All manufacturers had to provide details on their internal combustion engine, control electronics, exhausts, turbochargers, energy stores, and the MGU-K to the FIA for approval.

The dossier needs to be consistent among all teams using the same power unit, including the submission of fuel and lubricants for testing.

Mercedes HPP had found a loophole allowing them to run a higher compression ratio limit than the rules prescribed, sparking a push for change by other manufacturers.

New testing regulations for compression ratio measurement were updated before the homologation deadline, extending the timeframe for compliance until 2027.

The new rules will be gradually implemented, starting with the measuring of compression ratio at ambient temperatures, then adding a temperature criterion, followed by the exclusive measurement when the engine is hot from 2027.
