McLaren has been handed the biggest fine in Formula E history for breaching last season’s cost cap.
“The former McLaren Formula E outfit has been fined €400,000 by the FIA for breaching last season’s cost cap, marking the largest fine in Formula E history.
McLaren Electric Racing Limited (MERL) withdrew from the championship in July 2025 but committed a 4.54% cost cap breach by overspending £555,628.
The FIA announced that McLaren signed an Accepted Breach Agreement (ABA) on June 1 after voluntarily notifying the Cost Cap Administration of the overspend caused by the team’s wind-down process.
Despite McLaren’s cooperation and acknowledgment of the breach, it was found to have exceeded the cost cap, resulting in a fine to be paid within 30 days.
The FIA is expected to announce the compliance of other teams with the Season 11 cost cap later this summer, with McLaren’s financial report being a priority due to its exit from the championship.”
