In the 2024 MotoGP world championship, Ducati dominated with eight bikes on the grid, winning 19 out of 20 races and claiming an all-Ducati podium 14 times. With Ducati setting qualifying times nearly a second faster than other manufacturers around certain tracks, they became the formidable force in the championship. The Italian machinery showed a consistent 0.3-0.5 seconds advantage per racing lap over the grid average, leading to concerns about inter-manufacturer competitiveness and the future of MotoGP.
To address these concerns, concessions based on manufacturers’ performance in the previous season were introduced. Ducati, as the top performer, fell into Tier A, receiving limitations on engine development and no wildcards for the 2025 season. Lower-ranked manufacturers, like KTM and Aprilia in Tier C, were allowed more flexibility with wildcards and engine development to level the playing field. Overall, the concessions aim to maintain competitiveness, prevent manufacturer exits, and enhance the excitement and variety in MotoGP racing.
